SONG 4 Bottom
-------------
By Tool
From Undertow
Transcribed by Patrick Cevasco
(cevasp@rpi.edu)
I think that this is one of the best songs on the album and I was lucky
enough to stumble across the beginning the other day while I was playing.
p = pull off
h = hammer on
X = muted string
= slide up
\ = slide down
P.M. = palm mute
Use dropped D tuning (Drop the low E string to a D)
Since I am typing this, the spacing isn't exact, but it is not hard to
figure out. I put the h's and p's above the chords instead in between
them so that it is easier to compare the spacings between the chords.
Fig 1
E|------------------------------|
B|------------------------------|
G|---------h----p---h------p----|
D|-5----0-2-3--3-2-0-2-3--3-2-0-|
A|-5----0-2-3--3-2-0-2-3--3-2-0-|
D|-5----0-2-3--3-2-0-2-3--3-2-0-|

A|-5---0-2-3--3-2-0-2-3---3-2-0-|
D|-5---0-2-3--3-2-0-2-3---3-2-0-|
Note the difference
in the spacing. The second
figure has a longer pause
toward the end.

And this is how it goes...
Play Fig 1, then
Fig 1A, then
Fig 1, then
Fig 1B, then
Pause for about 13 sec letting the last chord ring, then
Play Fig 2 - 4x, then
Play Fig 2 - 4x (this time palm mute the strings)
(Something?) is broken now
(Something has roped?) it now
Dishonor(?) is broken now
It makes feel...
Do a side up
UGLY!
Play Fig 1 (starting with the word "On"), then
Fig 1A, then
Fig 1, then
Fig 1B, (w/o the last chord )
On my knees and burning
My piss(?) and bones(?) are human
I set my head on fire
Smell my soul its burning
Do a slide up (During the word "burning")
Play Fig 2 - 8x (?) (Start this right after the slide)
Broken
(Broken up?) to see the enemy
And I have swallowed the poison you feed me
But I survive on the poison you feed me (Even though you)
Guilt, fed
Hatred, fed
Weakness, fed
It makes feel...
Do a slide up
UGLY!
Play Fig 1 (starting with the word "On"), then
Fig 1A, then
Fig 1, then
Fig 1B, (w/o the last chord )
On my knees and burning
My piss(?) and bones(?) are human
I set my head on fire (I'm dead in)
Play Fig 3 - 8x (starting w/ the word "SIDE")
.....SIDE!........
[Shit adds up] 3x
Shit adds up at the bottom.....
[Interlude: - spoken by Henry Rollins]
Play Fig 4 through the entire interlude (about 18 x)
If I let you, you would make me destroy myself
In order to survive you, I must first survive myself
And I can sink no further, and I cannot forgive you
There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you
I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain
I will use my mistakes against you
There is no other choice
Shameless now
Nameless now
Nothing now
No one now
But my soul must be iron
Cause my fear is naked
I'm naked and fearless,
Then play this.....
E|-------------------------|
B|-------------------------|
G|-------------------------|
D|-----------------3-0-3-0-|
A|-----------------3-0-3-0-|
D|-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-3-0-3-0-|
And my fear is naked
Then play Fig 3 - 8x (Starting w/ the word "Dead")
[Dead inside] 4x
Nameless now
Shameless now
Nothing now
No one now
Then there is some picking part which I haven't figured out yet
[Shit adds up] 4x
Then play Fig 3 - 4x (Starting w/ the word "naked")
As you see me naked now
Fearless now
Naked now
Fearless now
Then there is that picking again
[Shit adds up] 3x
Play Fig 3 - 4x (Starting w/ the word "dead")
It leaves me dead inside
dead inside
dead inside
dead in........SIDE!
Then play variations of this
E|---------------------|
B|---------------------|
G|---------------------|
D|-0--X-2--X-5--X-3--X-|
A|-0--X-2--X-5--X-3--X-|
D|-0--X-2--X-5--X-3--X-|
Then comes this
E|--------------------------------------------------------|
B|--------------------------------------------------------|
G|--------------------------------------------------------|
D|-0--3--0--3--0--3--0--3--0--3-3--0--3-3--0--3-3--0--3-3-|
A|-0--3--0--3--0--3--0--3--0--3-3--0--3-3--0--3-3--0--3-3-|
D|-0--3--0--3--0--3--0--3--0--3-3--0--3-3--0--3-3--0--3-3-|
Then play Fig 1, (Starting w/ the word "Hatred") then
Fig 1A, then
Fig 1, then
Fig 1A
Hatred accuse me of lying
Cowardice accuse me of lying
Weakness accuse me of lying
Guilt accuse me of lying at the bottom
Then comes some stuff I didn't even try to tab
And it ends with
E|---------------------|
B|---------------------|
G|---------------------|
D|-5----0--------------|
A|-5----0--------------|
D|-5----0--------------|

And that is about it.
Just so there is no confusion, what is right above each sectiuo of
the lyrics gets played through that entire section, not befpre.
If you listen to the song it will be easy to figure out.
Not all of the lyrics are correct but that was the best I could do.
I left out some stuff that gets played in the background, especially at
the very end.

I hope I didn't screw it up too much
