this is my favourite song off flogging molly's fantastic new album FLOAT.
it's quite easy to play once you got the chords.
chords appearing in the song:
Am7: x02213
Am6: x02212
F : xx3211
Am : x02210
C : x30210
G : 3x0003
Dm : xx0231
the rhytmn is always the same:
exampel with Am7 chord:
| | | | | | | | |
e|-----3-----3-3-3-----3-----3-3-3-|
B|-----1-----1-1-1-----1-----1-1-1-|
G|-----2-----2-2-2-----2-----2-2-2-|
D|-----2-----2-2-2-----2-----2-2-2-|
A|-0---------------0---------------|
E|---------------------------------|
listen to the beginning of the song and you get the rhytmn easily.
let everything ring throughout.
INTRO:
acoustic guitar plays the following chord progression:
Am7 - Am6 - F - Am
(if you watch the high e-string, you will notice that the note played there goes from a
to an F# to an F and finally, with the last chord of the intro, to an E. that is the
melody, so try to emphasize the high strings in order to emphasize the melody.)
VERSE 1:
for the first verse, you have the same chord progression as for the intro.
Am7
Drink away the rest of the day,
Am6
Wonder what my liver would say,
F Am
Drink, It's All you can.
Am7
Blackened days With their bigger gales,
Am6
Blow in your parlor to discust the day,
F Am
Listen that's all you can.
CHORUS:
same strumming rhytmn, other chords:
C G
Ah but don't, no don't sink the boat,
Dm Am
That you built, you built to keep afloat,
C G
Ah no don't, no don't sink the boat,
Dm Dm
That you built...
in the background, very quiet, a accordian plays the same chords.
VERSE 2:
from now on, the acoustic guitar is overdubed by a second acoustic guitar, just if you
to know..xD just play a little louder from there on ;)
Am7
Sick and tired of what to say,
Am6
No one listens anyway,
F Am
Sayin'... that's all you can.
Am7
Rambling years of lousy luck,
Am6
You miss the smell of burning turf,
F Am
Dream... that's all you can.
In Verse 2, there also the fiddle/violin comes in playing that melody (arranged for a guitar):
Am7 Am6 F Am
e|--------|--------|------------------|------------|
B|--------|--------|------------------|------------|
G|--------|--------|------------------|------------|
D|-5------|-4------|-3----------5-3-0-|-2----------| x2
A|--------|--------|------------------|------------|
E|--------|--------|------------------|------------|
SECOND CHORUS:
the second chorus is exactly the same as the first :)
INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE:
Am - G - Dm - Am x2
the violin plays (2x):
Am G
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
B|-----5---5-----6-565-------------|-------5---5-----6-565-------------|
G|---------------------7---5-------|-----------------------7---5-------|
D|-----------------------------7---|-------------------------------7---|
A|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
Dm Am
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
B|-----5---5-----6-565-------------|-----------------------------------|
G|---------------------7---5---4---|-----------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------|---7-----------7-------------------|
A|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
(the 565 thing is a triplet.)
VERSE 3:
here, the fiddle plays the same "riff" as in the 2nd verse.
Am7
Singled out for who you are,
Am6
Takes all types to judge a man,
F Am
Feel... that's all you can.
Am7
Fill your sense with biggest ears,
Am6
Hide behind their own worst fears,
F Am
Live... that's all you can.
also, there is now an electric guitar playing:
Am7 | Am6 | F | Am | Am7 | Am6 | F | Am |
e|-------|-------|---------|-------|-------|-------|---------|----------|
B|-------|-------|---------|-------|-------|-------|---------|----------|
G|-------|-------|---------|-------|-------|-------|---------|----------|
D|-5~~~--|-4~~~--|-3~~~--0-|-2~~~--|-5~~~--|-4~~~--|-3~~~--0-|-2~~~---2-|
A|-------|-------|---------|-------|-------|-------|---------|----------|
E|-------|-------|---------|-------|-------|-------|---------|----------|
BRIDGE:
instead of the chorus, there comes another part with following chords for the acoustic guitar:
F - Am - F - Dm - Am
F Am
It's all you can
F Dm Am
It's all you can... do.
while the fiddle plays:
F Am F Dm Am
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|-----------------|---------0-------|-----------------|---------|--------|
B|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|---------|--------|
G|-45------5---5-4-|-----------------|-----------------|---------|--------|
D|-----------------|-2-------------2-|-3-----------3-2-|-0-------|--------|
A|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|---------|-3------|
E|-----------------|-----------------|-----------------|---------|--------|
and the electric guitar goes:
F Am F Dm Am
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|---------|
B|----------1--|-------------|----------1--|----------3--|---------|
G|-------2-----|-------2-----|-------2-----|-------2-----|---------|
D|-3-----------|-2----------2|-3-----------|-0-----------|---------|
A|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|-3-------|
E|-------------|-------------|-------------|-------------|---------|
next comes an INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE:
Am - G - Dm - Am x2
the violin plays (2x):
Am G
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
B|-----5---5-----6-565-------------|-------5---5-----6-565-------------|
G|---------------------7---5-------|-----------------------7---5-------|
D|-----------------------------7---|-------------------------------7---|
A|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
Dm Am
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
B|-----5---5-----6-565-------------|-----------------------------------|
G|---------------------7---5---4---|--------------(4---45------45--4)--|
D|---------------------------------|---7-------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------|-----------------------------------|
(part in (parathesis) only first time ;) )
[for later: i'll call the fiddle riff WITH the things in parathesis RIFF1 and the one
the things in parathesis RIFF2]
the electric guitar does something very very quiet...if you want to know it, download my
powertab :)
FOURTH AND LAST VERSE:
Am7
No matter where i put my head,
Am6
I wake up feeling sound again,
F Am
Breath... it's all you can.
Am7
Tomorrow smells of a lester cade,
Am6
Reach the bowls but glooming frame,
F Am
Be thankful... that's all we can.
the fiddle does nearly same thing as in the other verses and the electric guitar
the acoustic guitars by playing the chords, too (once each, let it ring)
LAST CHORUS:
C G
Ah but don't, no don't sink the boat,
Dm Am
That you Built, you built to keep afloat,
C G
Ah no don't, no don't sink the boat,
Dm Am
That you built... you built to keep afloat.
C G
Ah no don't, no don't sink the boat,
Dm Dm
That you built... that you built to keep afloat.
the fiddle plays in the last chorus:
C G Dm Am
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|-----------------|------------|------------|-----------------|
B|---------------3-|------------|------------|-----------------|
G|-5-----4-5---5---|-4----------|------------|-------------2-4-|
D|-----------------|------------|------------|-----------------|
A|-----------------|------------|-5-----5----|-3-------3-------|
E|-----------------|------------|------------|-----------------|
C G Dm Am
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|-----------------|------------|---------------|------------------|
B|---------------3-|-0----------|---------------|------------------|
G|-5-----4-5---5---|-----0------|---------------|---------2420-2-4-| 242 and
D|-----------------|-------0----|---------------|------------------| 575 are
A|-----------------|------------|-5-----5--575--|-3----------------| triplets
E|-----------------|------------|-------------7-|------------------|
C G Dm Dm
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
e|-----------------|------------|---------------|------------------|
B|---------------3-|-0----------|---------------|------------------|
G|-5-----4-5---5---|-----0------|---------------|------------------|
D|-----------------|-------0----|---------------|------------------|
A|-----------------|------------|-5-----5--575--|-5-------5--------|
E|-----------------|------------|-------------7-|------------------|
the electric guitar again just substitutes with the given chords.
INSTRUMENTAL INTERLUDE:
Am - G - Dm - Am x2
fiddle: exactly the same as in the second interlude
OUTRO:
the acoustic and electric guitars go on with Am - G - Dm - Am till the end.

Am
a ripe old age
G

B|--------------|-----------10-|--------------|-13----------|
G|--------------|--------------|--------------|-------------|
D|--------------|--------------|--------------|-------------|

E|--------------|--------------|--------------|-------------|
it repeats till the end, too.

Am
a ripe old age
G

* from there on, a second electric guitar (mild distortion) comes in playing the slide riff:

repeat that till the end too.
two times more the chord progression Am - G - Dm - Am and then it ends on Am :)
have fun!
